Program Overview |
Chronic lung disease remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the preterm infant. Injury to both the fragile lung parenchyma and airways of the preterm can lead to acute and long term consequence. Evidence suggests that mechanical ventilation and intubation play lead roles in neonatal lung injury. Optimizing the use of non-invasive respiratory therapy and surfactant administration, along with strategies to minimize intubation and re-intubation has the most promise to move the bar on chronic lung disease reduction in this population. The role of ventilation strategy and management and surfactant administration in this population will be discussed, along with potential new therapies and approaches for the near future. |
Learning Objectives |
At the completion of this activity, participants will be better able to:
1.Discuss current thinking on reduction of chronic lung disease through the more aggressive pursuit of non-invasive ventilation.
2.Identify the potential role of surfactant therapy in reducing chronic lung disease.
3.Delineate some of the potential consequences of recurrent intubations in the preterm infant.
4.List potential advances in aerosolized surfactant and its role in preventing chronic lung disease in preterm infants.
