Program Overview |
The use of exogenous pulmonary surfactants has significantly improved the survival of premature infants. Currently, surfactants are delivered to the alveoli by dispensing boluses of the liquid formulation into the trachea via an endotracheal tube. Existing evidence indicates that more uniform distribution of the surfactant within the lung is achieved by larger volume boluses administered over a shorter period of time. However, larger and faster boluses also increase the amount of time that the airway is transiently occluded during surfactant administration, raising concerns about potential peridosing adverse effects on factors such as mean arterial blood pressure and cerebral perfusion and oxygenation. This presentation will summarize preclinical and clinical literature that examines factors that affect the distribution of exogenous surfactant within the lung and the extent to which these factors may be associated with peridosing adverse effects. |
Learning Objectives |
At the completion of this activity, participants will be better able to:
1. Determine factors associated with the uniformity of surfactant distribution within the lung.
2. Identify the effects of surfactant administration on various physiological parameters (i.e., heart rate, oxygenation).
3. Relate the factors which determine pulmonary surfactant distribution to peridosing physiological effects.
