| | In this lecture, status of therapeutic hypothermia for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy will be presented. The pathophysiology of brain injury will be reviewed and role of hypothermia in decreasing injury from clinical trials published to date will be reviewed. |

| | Seetha Shankaran, MD
Dr. Seetha Shankaran is the Director of the Division of Neonatal Perinatal Medicine at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit and a Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit.
Dr. Shankaran earned her medical degree at Madras Medical College in India. Her pediatric residency was spent at the Jewish Hospital Medical Center in New York City, followed by a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. She is board-certified in pediatrics with a sub-board in neonatal-perinatal medicine.
A prolific writer and frequent guest lecturer in neonatal-perinatal medicine, Dr. Shankaran is the author or co-author of more than a hundred journal articles, case reports, and book chapters addressing her clinical and research interests which include long-term follow-up of high risk neonates, birth asphyxia, intracranial hemorrhage and the impact of maternal substance abuse.
