Lecture Overview:
To discuss the common causes of the two main presentations of liver disease in the newborn, that is, cholestasis and liver failure and the assessment and evaluation of infants with these conditions.
Target Audience:
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of Residents in Pediatrics, Medicine Pediatrics, and Family Medicine; and Fellows in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
Objectives:
After viewing this lecture, the participant will be able to:
  • Understand the causes of a direct hyperbilirubinemia
  • Discuss the etiologies of liver failure in the newborn
Lecturer Biography:
Katryn N. Furuya, MD

Dr. Katryn Furuya is a pediatric gastroenterologist/hepatologist at the duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE and an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA She is a graduate of the University of Toronto, in Ontario, Canada. She completed her residency and fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She is board certified in pediatric gastroenterology and pediatric transplant hepatology.

Dr. Furuya received the Duncan L. Gordon Research Fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation, as part of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Medical College of Virginia. Her clinical and research interests include liver disease and transplant hepatology.
